Cost shouldn't be a barrier to recreation. Municipally-operated centres take part in HRM's Affordable Access Program, which offers reduced or free access to programs and facilities for eligible low-income residents.

How do I register for a Halifax recreation program?
Registration is done online through myREC, Halifax's recreation registration system. Create a free myREC account, sign in, search for the program by centre or activity, and register. The same account works for every municipally-operated centre.
When does registration open?
Programs run in four seasons (fall, winter, spring, summer) and registration opens a few weeks before each one. For Fall 2026, general programs opened August 18 and aquatics and skating opened August 25. Opening dates change each season, so confirm on myREC.
Which centres have a swimming pool?
Among municipally-operated centres, Captain William Spry (the Spryfield Lions Wave Pool) and Needham Community Centre have indoor pools. Aquatics registration usually opens a week after general programs.
Is financial help available?
Yes. HRM's Affordable Access Program offers reduced or free access to recreation programs and facilities for eligible low-income residents at municipally-operated centres.
