Halifax Parking — Frequently Asked Questions
How much is parking in downtown Halifax?
On-street parking rates vary by zone and demand and are billed by the minute, so check the pay station or the current rate on halifax.ca. Paid on-street parking is in effect Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Is parking free in the evenings and on Sundays?
Yes. On-street parking is free after 6 p.m., on Sundays, and on most public holidays. Some downtown-core zones now also charge on Saturdays, so always check the sign or pay station on your block.
How do I pay for street parking in Halifax?
Pay at a pay station (coins or tap debit/credit) or with the HotSpot mobile app. You need your licence-plate number to start a session — there are no windshield tickets to display.
How long can I park at a meter?
The maximum time is posted on each block's sign. You can often extend remotely through the HotSpot app, but you can't exceed the posted limit — overstaying risks a ticket.
Where can I find parking lots and garages downtown?
This page maps public lots, garages, and accessible spaces from HRM open data. Large garages such as Scotia Square and Park Lane offer hourly and daily rates when street parking is full.
